Picking Blueberries
I had a dream. To spend my Sunday picking blueberries at a local farm. This past weekend, that dream came true.
We drove 45 minutes to find ourselves in Georgia at Harriet's Bluff, where we were welcomed by Gerard, who shook our hands and introduced us to his organic blueberry farm. We donned 'picking harnesses' and looked for the red flags to tell us which varieties were ready to be picked. Some were so ripe they fell straight into our buckets. Some were so inviting that they fell straight into our mouths. We became hot and sweaty, but happily so. At the end, Gerard gave us instructions of how to weigh and pay for our berries - and in true generous southern form, offered us I.O.U.'s in case we didn't have the correct change. Such a delight. We escaped the heat of the open farm to a much shadier lunch spot. We shared a picnic to celebrate our pickings. Then I went home to make pie...
